This was the first time I had visited the northern part of Sri Lanka. It was a place where you could imagine a simple life. Sitting and painting happily in nature with the music of birds. Surrounded by Buddhist Temples, wandering monks and just the smell of quiet... Magical.
Anuradhapura is Sri Lanka's first capital city and one of Sri Lanka's most important cities. This ancient city is considered sacred to the Buddhist culture and boasts many monasteries and Buddhist temples.
Sri Lanka is a naturally appealing location.
My intention of capturing the moment on canvas was joyful and I was fully engaged in it. then suddenly my leg was burning in pain! What??? An ant bite! Could be worse, I say to myself. Then suddenly a peacock in full glory walks by... back to the moment...
Anuradhapura would be a wonderful place to go as a bird watcher or nature photographer. in fact, there are tours just for that! My goal is to set up an art travel tour where I can share these magical places with you in real life. You'd have the enjoyment of painting in a new and fascinating land with little discomfort. Learn and create to the sound of peacocks and eagles.
It's so enjoyable when the locals come and share their fresh chai with you and the driver brings Sri Lankan String Hoppers for breakfast right to your painting location.
Here are a few photos of the local wildlife.
Painting on location at one of the ruins.
I truly am challenged by plein-air painting, but it is a great way to improve your speed and accuracy in your work. I encourage
everyone to try it.
Here, I did a quick study of the rain tree as they always remind me of Dr Seuss images!
This was located in the middle of the grounds surrounded by ruins of buildings that would have housed the monks many 100's of years before.
Please let me know if you have any comments, suggestions, or questions...
My next post will be focused on the Temples, monks and culture... please check back again.
